HMS Vengeance was a pre-Dreadnought battleship and part of the 1st Squadron at the Gallipoli landings on 25th April 1915. From her position in Morto Bay she took part in the bombardment of the Turkish defences. On 15th June, 1915  Ernest Fryer died from burns but there is no indication in the ship’s log as to how he received these burns. At the time the ship was anchored in Port Iero, Mityleni. a bay now called Kolpos Geras on the Greek Island of Lesbos.
